Call for applications- Youth Journalists and Bloggers- 7th UNESCO Youth Forum

Dear all,

As you know, the 7th UNESCO Youth Forum of the 36th UNESCO General Conference will take place from 17 to 20 October 2011.

Established in 1999, the Youth Forum has become an integral part of UNESCO’s highest decision-making body – the General Conference. It brings together young delegates from all over the world to exchange views, share experiences and identify common opportunities and challenges.

As part of the 7th Youth Forum, UNESCO will be offering five young journalists and bloggers the opportunity to participate in the Paris event. Journalists and bloggers who are selected to attend the 7thUNESCO Youth Forum will be able to network with youth delegates from 193 countries, with key members of international organizations and with non-governmental organizations.

A young blogger from each of UNESCO’s five constituent regions (Africa, Arab States, Asia and the Pacific, Europe and North America & Latin America and the Caribbean) will be selected.

The application deadline is Thursday, September 15, 2011.

Youth journalists and bloggers have three roles: Firstly, they will ensure internal coverage of the Forum through blogs, articles, video clips, radio coverage and other relevant mediums. Secondly, they will be responsible for reporting news of the Forum to their regional and local communities, networks and organizations. Thirdly, they will accompany the action of youth delegates in implementing the recommendations of the Forum in the regions.

Below are the basic selection criteria and the processes for application and selection.

Applications should be sent to youth@unesco.org with the reference “Youth blogger application for the 7th UNESCO Youth Forum”

Air travel and accommodation for the selected youth journalists and bloggers will be covered by UNESCO.

By reporting on the Youth Forum’s discussions, activities, regional follow-up, and outcomes, the youngjournalists and bloggers will directly enhance its results.

We look forward to receiving your applications!

  2. This is very interesting. However, I feel that it is too exclusive. What if one has not yet had the opportunity to work as a journalist. And, for someone like me, blogging sites are blocked by the school. I use the school’s network for internet access. Does this make me and many others out there incompetant for the job.

    • Dear Belardina,

For some point you are right. However this seminar will be only 3 days and only few bloggers and journalist can attend it. So as to apply you have to prove your experience in journalism and blogging which actually mean that you did blogging or writing of articles previously… This is the condition.

The reason is to improve the spreading out of the forum’s outcomes in local networks, and give occasion to active young media workers to expand their existing network, not to give a training to young journalists and bloggers.

And finally, I must say that if you take the example of Egypt, many internet activists were cut out of the net in a national level and find solution to keep posting and reporting on the event during the uprising. I guess this is what a journalist have to do to keep spreading his idea and not depending on a controled internet network…

  3. I am Daniel A. Martinez, 16 years old. I am from Colombia, but reside in the U.S. Although I don’t have much experience writing as a published journalist, I have been part of a NPO called Global Potential. In which I traveled since 2009 to impoverished communities in Nicaragua, Dominican Republic and Haiti and carried on community development projects . While I lived in these communities for 6 weeks. I blogged every week, and diligently kept a daily journal. I believe I have the capability to be a journalist and be a potential participant for this opportunity.I am constantly writing for personal interest and I would describe my writing as very analytic, here there are two of my blogs written from my resent trip to Haiti and DR. My questions is if I am applicable to participate and how do I apply?

  15. Hi, i have read through the requirements for selection and have noted in particular the second bullet which calls for a brief cover letter. is this a letter of motivation to qualify why one should be selected?

  17. Is there an alternative email where interested applicants can send the required documents for selection? An auto-reply from youth@unesco.org tells me of a failure of delivery everytime I send mine.

    Posted by Jesse | September 13, 2011, 9:23 pm
    • Dear Jesse,

I am sorry but I am just a messenger here, I don’t have any alternative e-mail… Maybe they closed it due to the too big amount of mails they get.

Also, unesco.org mail doesn’t accept too heavy attached document, try to resend with less heavy documents.

      Best regards.
